I got my new puppy on April 30! It is my fourth dog! She is 38 days old. It took a while to think of her name, which must begin with "C" and should be a name of spice. My other dogs are Cinnamon, Chestnut and Cappuccino. I thought of Creamy, Cocoa, Caramel Maquiat or Coconut...etc.. You can tell I am a big coffee lover. My friend who encouraged me to keep the fourth dog told me those names are too common for dogs! So, I looked into a spice encyclopedia and found out "Chervil". "Chervy" sounds cute (to me). Chervy weighs 530g and is very active. She sleeps most of the time. So far, Cinnamon and Chestnut try to avoid her. Cappuccino, the Chihuahua, on the other hand, plays with her gently. I was scared to bring her home with me from the breeder because she was too young to be separated from the mother. It has been a week since she came her new home. I am glad that she is growing bigger and bigger everyday. |

The year 2006 will be over soon. It has been another exciting year this year. Was it really? I have forgotten what has happened already . Well, I do know that I was very lucky to be able to join The Linguist and made friends with lots of people, specially, Marianne, Kazuyo, Satomi of my Sat group and, Mai, Tony, Emma (not my boss!) of the current THY group. Nooop! I have not forgotten about Wanko, Tamaki, Sumiko, Hideko and Yukipu who are always fun and supportive to me! AND special thanks go to Jill and Julie as well as Steve and other tutors who have given me inspiration and motivation to do my very best in my life.

Dear my friends of The Linguist,
Thank you so much for your nice words about me being the learner of the month. I was kind of feeling down for a while since my job got really busy. It was only recent that I started feeling better and decided to study again. So, this was a prize for me to go on and I am really appreciative to The Linguist and my friends at the Linguist.

Japan's education ministry has published a letter purportedly from a school pupil threatening suicide on Saturday if he continues to be bullied.
The Japanese education minister received a package of letters from the child anonymously on Monday. The ministry has asked education boards across the country to check whether any pupils in their district have problems similar to those described. The contents of the letter have been published in Japanese newspapers.
It is hard to tell whether this is a genuine cry for help or not but the ministry is taking no chances, says the BBC's Chris Hogg in Tokyo. At a news conference on Tuesday, chief cabinet secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki stressed how seriously the threat was being taken.
'Living is painful'
"This is a matter of life and death," he told Reuters news agency. "We want him (the pupil) to treat as precious the life received from his parents and ancestors."
The package sent to the ministry included letters intended for the education minister, the child's bullies and his parents. In the letter addressed to Japan's Education Minister Bunmei Ibuki, the pupil - who is believed to be a boy - complains that he is being bullied and those responsible have not been punished.
"I am writing this letter because living is painful," the letter said.
"If nothing has changed by Wednesday, 8 November, I will commit suicide."

In a note to the bullies the boy asks why they are picking on him. Another note addressed to a teacher asks why they will not help him.
Postmark identification
Also in the package were other notes to officials, a school principal, and to the boy's own parents. To them he says simply: "I am sorry." None of these letters gives enough information to identify the pupil. All the authorities have to go on is one character on the postmark, which could help to narrow down the search for him.
Education boards have been put on alert across the country in the hope they can prevent him carrying out his threat. At Tuesday's press conference, Mr Ibuki made a personal plea to the child, saying the child's life was not his alone to take.
"Your mother and father brought you into this world, holding you in their arms," he said.
"I want you to understand that you are not being left alone."
Bullying is a real problem in Japan. Three bullied teenagers have taken their own lives in Japan since August. The authorities have been trying to come up with ways to tackle the problem, but they are not finding it easy.
What makes someone bully?
What, if any, are the characteristics of bullies’ victims?
Are boys more likely to bully than girls?
Do boys bully differently from girls?
Is bullying might be more difficult for victims to deal with in cultures which attach great
importance to personal reputation or pride in Asia?
I have been very bad for THY on Saturday. I cannot even get up at 8:00 am! I used to be a lot better than before.
I feel so dull and empty...! Is it just because the weather is getting colder? When I finally able to join Jullie's discussion with Yukiko and Yumiko at night, talking about T.V., I really enjoyed it and I felt really good to be able to force myself sit in front of my PC.
Just as Yukiko says in her blog, I am facing same kind of problems. It is sometimes very difficult for me to chose a content from the Linguist. I spend so much time to click to find a study material and end up not finding anything. It is not their contents but my feeling is the one which gives me trouble. Besides, I don't reveiw and save words...
I know there are many members who are studying so hard in spite of their busy schedule. I am hoping that our girls talk on Saturday night gives me courage and revive me! Marianne, Kazuyo and Satomi! please! s'il vous plait! The photo is a coockie house I live in now with my three dogs.
This was my first time that I could not submit my writing up to 1,000 words. I was so good submitting my writings for about four months. I even bought an extra credit because I could not stop writing! I would thought I would be a novelist (joking!). In the last THYdiscussions which I have missed, they talked about "time management". We are all struggling to sort out our time schedule to achieve our own goals.
I have decided to download at least one content of The Linguist and stick to it for a week. I was rather reading them voraciously before as I was not busy. I will be a bit more choosy what I study.. My new month starts on the 7th. I may be able to write something more and keep the record going!
(Sumiko san, do you recognize the word "voraciously"? It is on the first page of "1100 words you need to know" which I failed to finish but studied only the first section in three years!)
By the way, Marianne, Kazuyo and myself started to get together on Sunday afternoon on Skype when available. We talk about various things. It was the day for beautiful girls to get together! Unfortunately, Kazuyo went out for MOMIJI Gari (an excursion for viewling scarlet maple leaves) today. Let's wait for her beautiful pictures with lovely Hiro on her blog. Marianne asked me what "SUKIYAKI" meant. I told her it was one of Japanese delicacy (yummy!) and also a name of the Japanese song which got really big in the U.S. in the 60's. I got so curious and she told me that she found a beautiful song on a net radio and post it on her blog! That was the very original song sang by Kyu Sakamoto.
The music was simple and beautiful. The song was covered by several singers in English and became big hits everytime in 40 years. The song surely has a charm to attract people.
I have finished my writing up to 999 words finally for this month of The Linguist! My record is still alive!
I am so happy that I felt like posting something on VOX again! I thought I would never come back here when I was too busy with my new boss.
I speak English all the time at work even with my Japanese colleagues, as well as with my boss. I also translate Japanese into English and vice versa. Yet, there was not enough time to study English.
The podcasting of The Linguist is very helpful when I have no time to log on onto The Linguist. When Jill and Steve talked about "think of" and "think about", I tried to think of the differences by myself. Those two can be used almost in the same way according to their conversation.
First, I thought "think of" is more emotional, passionate, also and passive.
"Think about" is used when you think about something more logically. When a person is offered to be transferred to somewhere by his/her boss, the boss would say, "You don't have to answer right now, but you think about it...". But However, you could also say to your loved ones, "I thought about you", not " I thought of you".
Well, I am getting confused!
Tammy corrected my writing. Here is her comment:
Different phrases can be quite confusing in English. "Think of" is usually used to refer to something that comes to your mind quickly, such as "Oh, I just thought of that!" whereas 'think about" refers to something that you are or will be contemplating, such as 'Well I will have to think about that".
"Contemplating" is the word I wanted to say when I mentioned "logically" in my writing! Thanks! Tammy!
